Built From The Community

BRIEF

Founded in 1969, El Museo del Barrio was created by artists, educators, and community members to celebrate Puerto Rican art, culture, and history. Today, it continues to be a space for Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American art and culture in New York City.

As El Museo grows, we saw an opportunity to refresh its identity and better show what makes the museum special. Through research and conversations with the community, we found a strong sense of love and connection to El Museo. Our goal was to create a new identity that feels bold, welcoming, and connected to the community, while still honoring the museum’s history and culture.

FINDING

Through our research, we found that community is at the heart of El Museo. Art, education, and events all bring people together.

This led to the circle as a key part of the identity. The circle represents community, connection, and culture. It brings the different parts of El Museo together into one system. The circle can move across the identity, creating a simple and flexible way to connect art, education, and community.

INSPIRATION FOR TYPE FACE

We noticed circles throughout the museum, especially in the theater ceiling with its glass circle design. The circle also represents connection and community.

We used the circle as the foundation of our identity. It became our type grid, helping shape the letters and create a consistent look.

The circle connects art, education, and community while giving the identity a flexible system that can be used across the brand. By taking a shape from the museum and giving it a new purpose, we created an identity that feels connected to El Museo while looking fresh and modern.
